Is This Thing On?

Date December 2, 2009
Miracler Lauren Barr
Location San Francisco

Lauren Barr is a sassy SF-based graphic designer whose deft touch can turn even a sundry parcel into a frame-worthy collectible. And happily for us, her exquisite taste also extends to music. Not so long ago, our Miracler convinced me to accompany her to Vegas to witness Dolly Parton in sacred concert, and I'm grateful to have had the common sense to follow. On another pilgrimage there for Tom Jones, Lauren personally selected, packaged, and distributed at the decisive moment the appointed underwear for each individual to hurl at the stage.

Organized, tasteful, and clever? You bet. And today we all benefit: having played this mix rather heavily since last Friday, I find myself quite smitten. It's nothing like any we've seen yet, and dare I say, goes seamlessly with eggs and coffee. Is this thing on?, Lauren asks. I think it's rhetorical.

Notes by LB
A few of these songs I heard first while streaming the always surprising Radio FIP Paris, some have been dug out of the archives, a couple are from the Willkommen Records Sampler, and one is from Grace Jones' first album in almost twenty years. All have been in heavy play over here lately, and I hope you dig them too. The artwork is a pic I took last month at PS 1 in Queens of Christian Marclay's excellent "2822 Records".

Mix is here. Enjoy, XOK

I am digging this in every respect. I will have to check out Radio FIP. And your cover? Blasphemous treatment of vinyl, but very cool nevertheless. Thanks for the sounds!

Yes, I do dig them too. In fact, this may be my favorite mix so far this season. Thanks!

Hey, thanks!

A side note: It was a very strange feeling to walk on those records. I was so very careful with them when I was growing up, and also because they make a creepy affecting sound when you shuffle over them.

Oh yeah this thing is on!! Rockin' Mix!
It does remind me of Radio Nova from Paris or here in Chicago we have a show called Radio M. They played that same ageless Grace Jones song on it.
Really wonderful stuff here, and the mix is seamless.

Nice unique (un-3mpmp mix). Thanks for the tunes. But I didn't get a Grace Jones tune, what is J-M talking about?

Great mix. Hadn't realized how deeply that Bomba Estereo tune had infiltrated my summer, but it brought back a lot of recent, fond memories. Thanks!

You should have Grace Jones' "This is Life" as the number 4 song...
