Strategic Miracle Selection
Once in a while, as Your Hostess is checking comment boxes and thinking about whom to anoint as our next Miracler, she factors in what might lead to Mix Success. Today is one of those days.
Seeing that it had been ages since Alexandra "Alix" Tyler gave us April 2014's much-loved Spring Has Sprung AND that she's an A+ Commenter (on S. Bramfitt's recent Apache mix, she begins with, "When I first laid eyes on this mix I thought, "he's either a mad man or a genius!"), not to mention that Alix is one of our go-to Seasonal Mix Pros, having given us 1 Spring & 3 Winter mixes in the past, Your Hostess knew what she was doing when handing the First Week of Summer reins to this gal. And as you'll soon see, everybody wins.
Crush on the Lifeguard: Liner Notes by AT
It’s summer time. And there’s no way I’m looking for a boyfriend. But an afternoon at the pool just might change everything. Summer crushes were always the best. Sun-soaked and fueled by the notion that in a few months it would all be over. While summer crushes can be frothy and sweet, I didn’t want this mix to be too cloying. The mood I was going for was a little giddy….a little crazy….but at the end of the day, a whole lotta fun. Happy Summer, miraclers! xo Alix PS, The lifeguard is SO checking you out!!

Now that's a mix title!
That picture is giving me feelings.
Can't wait to listen to the soundtrack!
I'm with you on that, Xtina. He looks like a cross between Cory Wells (Three Dog Night) and Tom Selleck. HOTT! Can't wait to listen to this mix as well. Summer music is my favorite music!
I would like to very surreptitiously ogle this mix while it gets up to go the refreshment stand for a soft-serve cone.
LOL you guys are cracking me up.....I actually made two covers and couldn't decide. So Kelly suggested I use this one for the post and then the other will show up in yer iTunes.
;-)
On a sad day of turmoil here in the UK, this has been a bit of a life saver, over-brimming with good tunes and an upbeat persona. Current favourite is Clairy Brown & the Bangin’ Rackettes (who knew?). The Mungo Jerry track evokes all sorts of memories. He once played at my school, and spent the whole concert teasing a bunch of silly schoolboys with those opening notes, duh de duh de de... then playing something else. Great stuff Alix, thank you.
Okay, I was wondering why the iTunes artwork was different!
(I know which is my favorite. Ahem.)
Beth—I was thinking a mix between Dennis Weaver and a young Sam Elliott, and of course love that you threw in some TDN, classic McKenna move!. HOTT is right! Hubba hubba!
Out of the gate, I would like to say that the solo ‘stache being rocked by the guy on the cover is out of hand awesome. In my lifeguarding days as a teenager, I would have given anything to have been able to grow such a fine example of lip ornament.
I like the God Help The Girl cut. I had no idea the Belle and Sebastian people had this project going. It’s cool.
The Clairy Brown cut is right up my alley. I love the edgy, almost distorted sound they got.
I didn’t know that Yo La Tengo covered this song. I like it.
This is a great Black Keys song. It’s how summer feels to me for some reason.
Boom! Bap! Pow! is such fun. The commercial kind of freaks me out, but the song is 100% danceable. Not by me of course, but by people who can actually dance.
I haven’t heard In The Summertime in ages. Wait, maybe I have. It’s summertime, I don’t have the energy for a memory test.
Surfer Blood is one of the bands I keep hearing about, but I think this is the first of their songs that I’ve actually listened to. I like it.
I like the Borns cut too. That’s another one that I’ve come across, but I don’t think I’ve heard them before today.
Bleeding Knees Club is fantastic. They sound like Smashcords, but with vocals and production values beyond a mono cassette recorder in the guitar player’s living room. Very nice.
Pas/cal is cool. It’s so delicate.
Fitz is such a great band. This is a solid summer song for sure.
I dig the Sia cut too. I’m sort of surprised, but it’s just so catchy. This is another one that I’ve heard of so much, but I think this is my first experience.
Ah, Bryan Adams. This one takes me back. It sounds so very much like summer in the 80s.
Thank you for a great mix, Alix. Well done.
OK, somewhat troubled by the "Magnum Sellick & The Sundance Kid Mustache Porn Fan Fiction" that is going on in the comments section but on to the songs new to me:
Clairy Brown & the Bangin’ Rackettes -- OK, I have heard this song and dig it but I had no idea it was by whatever that band is called and its NEAT STUFF and shows how all the tell-tale signs of a 2016 hit single are actually pretty groovy (stomping beats, girl group call-backs, surf rock guitar etc. Repeat everything for Boom! Bap! Pow!
Surfer Blood, "take it easy" -- more wrangler guitar, pretty indie vocals and an off-kilter arrangement. Neat stuff! Kind of like Vampire Weekend but it doesn't go from good to bad with repeated listening.
Holychild, "Happy With Me" -- sounds like a hit to me and deserves it. I guess it was a hit but I listen to old Bill Evans records so I have no idea.
Bleeding Knees Club -- great band name and it sounds like what I listened to 30 years ago -- count me in!!!!
Bryan Adams -- some pretty good tunes back in the '80s before he became the go-to movie power ballad guy in the '90s. I learned to play "Run To You" sitting on the beach so a good place to say, "thanks!!"
I like that your summer music doesn't always go the way of Brian Wilson. There are dark overtones, like Surfer Blood and the Bleeding Knees Club. So much blood. Are you a vampire, Alix? Anyway, those are great tunes, and as much as I love The Cure's original version AND Yo La Tengo, I've never heard their take on it. Reverent and wonderful, of course. Never heard of God Help the Girl either. Love when a band puts their name in a song title. Have a great summer!
I bought Mungo Jerry's single "In the Summertime" with my allowance money. True story.
Oh. And Clairy Brown & The Bangin' Rackettes' "Love Letter" is my official song of the summer. Thank you, Alix. Thank you, Prodge.
Love this mix full of summer joy and angst, Alix! Great set of songs, and the sequencing was expertly done. Standout tunes for me were the opener (God Help the Girl), Suit (how damned catchy is that?) and the Bleeding Knees Club. XOXO Beth
Dear all,
It's been quite a while! Hope you're all doing great. How very sweet of Kelly to bring me back to her mailing list!! Thank you thank you. I really regret not having much time lately for as much listening and commenting as you all deserve. 3MPMP just rocks.
Alix, I really enjoyed this mix!! Great theme, great artwork(s), amazing tunes! As is the norm with the best miracles, there was a nice blend of familiar classics and yummy discoveries. Boom! Bap! Pow! did just that :)
Did I say thanks?!?
Sorry for getting to this so late and all, it does not reflect my appreciation for the Crush on the Lifeguard.
5 of these songs are at the tip top of summer playlist!
Holychild, Surfer Blood, Sia, Black Keys, Borns, Boom! Bap! Pow! Wow!!!
Alix, Thank you for another energy charged mix!
You never disappoint!!
And any mix with Sam Elliot on the cover is definitely gonna nail it.
that's summery, & not just mungo jerry. what are the kids calling freak folk today? well this is even before that. I particularly like the surfer blood, is there an extra beat added in the riffs there? and just to say yo la tengo plays friday i'm in love is to know how good this is. and the kids were bopping to some of the other tunes so there are other high points there i can't remember.
thanks for sharing, Alix!
Surfer Blood and Bleeding Knees Club are tops. Mungo Jerry — yes! I'm also glad to have Bryan Adams in my collection. I suppose I shouldn't be embarrassed to enjoy some Bryan Adams now and then. Nice 'stache.
Nice choices, and crazy eclectic to boot. From Surfer Blood to Bryan Adams. I heard YLT do that tune at HSB this past week, and it was lovely in person too. Thanks for a a great summer mix that i would've been proud to blast from my lifeguard stand back in the day...if they'd let us actually listen to music.
