DateDanny: No thanks, Gramps. You already gave me an apple, two peaches and a bunch of grapes. I couldn’t be more full.
Gramps: Have some fruit.
1. Have You Seen My Baby? – Flamin’ Groovies San Fran freak flag cut from a different fabric.
2. Fools Fall in Love – The Drifters I was introduced to the song by a college station DJ who said “Fuck it, I’m playing it twice.”
3. Walk On By – The Beach Boys Burt hooks up with Brian for less than a minute. Shame there wasn’t more.
4. Blues Run The Game – Jackson C. Frank Badly burned, then strung out, then lost his mind, then shot in the eye. Then died. But he left us something beautiful.
5. Hey Babe – The Youngbloods Very early cut. Banana played a cool sounding guitar.
6. In and Out of Love – Sponsors From the great “Yellow Pills” power pop series.
7. Let Me Know – Locksley Out of Brooklyn, but decidedly Liverpuddly.
8. She’s an Adultress – Sprague Brothers If Buddy Holly had lived six years longer, he would have worked with Bobby Fuller and it would have sounded like this.
9. Savannah Woman – Tommy Bolin Never liked the crotch music he did with Deep Purple, but the tender tunes really get me.
10. Jennifer – Bert Sommer I’ve been reading that he was the most warmly-received act on the first day of Woodstock.
11. Thicker Than a Smokey – Gary Higgins Acid folk or psyche folk I guess is what they call it.
12. The Last Year – Stiv Bators Actually, the last year of his life was 1990.
13. Ice Cream Man – John Brim Van Halen served it up pretty nice too.
14. Made Up My Mind – Savoy Brown Blues from Brits, circa ’70.
15. Face In My Gin – Restless More Brits, this time doing 80’s rockabilly revival. Pre-dates the Stray Cats.
16. Wild Man – Josie Kreuzer My favorite rockabilly chick singer.
17. It Must Be Him – Vikki Carr Vikki Carr. Real name: Florencia Bisenta de Casillas Martinez Cardona.
18. Blue Eyes Bleeding (Demo) – Gin Blossoms Don’t be dissuaded by the top 40 junk they did after ‘93. Go for the primo Doug Hopkins stuff from the early years.
19. I Lost My Girl To An Argentinian Cowboy – Unknown Hot amateur action.
20. Five Point Turn – The Kamikaze Heart The five point turn is better than pulling into a stranger’s driveway.
21. She Darked The Sun – George Elliott Not the writer of Middlemarch. I hated that book in Lit 302.
22. Mind Over Matter – Nolan Strong & The Diablos The start of my own Detroit medley. As the Blasters sang, “This one comes from 1962.”
23. So American – The Mutants This one’s from 1978.
24. Athletic Dan – Frank Allison & The Odd Sox 1989.
25. Blackout –The Paybacks And 2002.
26. Que Sera, Sera – Sly & the Family Stone I put Sly at the end ‘cuz he was always late.

I'm not going to listen to this mix. I'm just going to keep re-reading the track list. That, I think, will bring me enough joy. More than I deserve, really.
Top notch mix from end to end. Great pick of a Youngbloods track! Especially enjoyed the new-to-me trio of Frank, Sommer, and Higgins-- good stuff for a grey and rainy Chicago morning. Many thanks!!
Yeah, that Youngbloods song—it took me about 50 listens before I could move on to Track 6. Triviette: the son of 'Banana' Levinger lives on our street! Also a musician. Weirdly, I ran into him recently and told him how much I loved this song, and he said he's never heard of it! Is it possible it was renamed for its official release? Kooky.
All-around wonderful mix, Dan, and oddly Thanksgiving-sounding to these ears. I've already thrown large chunks into my 'best-of-3mpm' playlist.
XOK
Let it PLEASE be him, or I shall die. Crazy. Huh? Whatever happened to the word "shall"?
Thanks for all the good stuff, Dan. The Stiv Bators song is a surprise. The double-tracked vocals remind me a bit of The Byrds. Embarrassed to say I haven't heard him since the Dead Boys were around. Didn't know he had such melodious pipes.
The Mutants song is another surprise. Thought it was going to be the band of the same name and era from San Francisco, and-- huh?-- didn't recognize the sound. The Frisco Mutants only put out one album, something called Fun Terminal. Recently performed at a Fab Mab punk reunion at The Fillmore, according to the Interwebs.
Check out the toy hammer percussion in this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTvKCoweWjU&feature=related
Love the Sly Stone track. Fun to dub Sly's soul on a video of Super Miss Whitey-white Doris Day singin' her version of Que Sera, Sera.
Flamin' Groovies! Saw them play a high school in Berkeley way back when.
Hey Babe. Nice. Sixth grade teacher Miss Jordan had all us kids singing the Youngbloods' for the elementary school Christmas pagent. C'mon people now, smile on your brother.
Thanks all. Glad you enjoyed it. Tim - Stiv went power pop after the Dead Boys died. Who knew he had it in him? The toy hammers rock, btw.
What a rollicking romp! All written in the key of pop (more or less) and yet internally truly diverse.
She's an Adultress — that voice! Devastating.
And Gary Higgins: so cool and dreamy. Beautiful.
And Athletic Dan: makes me aspire.
thanks for such a rich fruit basket.
that drifters tune is a classic
:)
Clearly you have no idea how penetrating "Let it please be him" can be. It can stick in one's head for WEEKS at a time. Ah well, Christmas music is bound to balance things out, if not then I will try to recite her real name.
and yes, Kelly you were right, I really do love this mix.
As if the beginning wasn't enough (the one-two suckerpunch of the Groovies followed by "Fools Fall in Love" was irresistible), this mix totally won me over with some killer things I didn't know at all and others that I hadn't heard in decades --The Sponsors yay!!!
Also, it suddenly made me realise just how much of "The Last Year" was borrowed for The Springfields' "Tranquil" (a personal favorite that should pop up on my mix down the road...).
Thanks!
Love them time-warping Sprague Brothers.
It must me him? That's some heavy shit.
Roy-era Groovies is gritty, love it! I agree with doug, the track list was a "like" (but we don't have that here on a button)
