Where we last saw Xtina
Was deep inside Pairs, a mix about which you said, 'Great mix, great concept...why, it's musical concentration!', 'Totally loved the mix, totally love the concept and damn, I must admit it, I totally fell for Hugh Grant (?!?!?)'s 'Pop! Goes My Heart'!. It's so well-crafted, the parody so well executed, it sounds like the real thing. Instant guilty pleasure,' 'You should seriously get to mashin.' 'Love this mix—it works on me like it works on you,' 'Music aside, these are my favorite liner notes. After reading the intro, I couldn't download and get listening fast enough. The Warpaint song is a great find. And Head Over Heels reminds me why I loved Tears for Fears so much in high school,' 'Let it be said that it's refreshing to see some familiar tunes. Empire State of Mind, Boys of Summer, Pop! Goes My Heart; they're musical grilled cheese sandwich. A delicious, guilty pleasure,' and that's before you get to the oodles of other comments about the Don Henley and Hugh Grant additions.

This week brings another enigmatic mix from that hi-energy redhead. AND, this one (and FYI, the title spelling is intentional—not a Hostess typo this time) is accompanied by its own guessing game and related Sweepstakes (separate from our Sweepstakes #2)! She's a giver, that Stork, as well as a Top 5 Commenter since she joined up. So let's put our e-hands together for what I can guarantee you will be a mix the kids'll be talking about for Seasons to come.

Liner notes by CS
"Sweet!" You said to yourself when you saw it was me making today's mix. "Could it be the long-awaited 'Pairs II'? I've been jonesing for more Don Henley in The Prodge!" Alas, Pairs II did not win the Round Robin of themes this time around.

A ways back I was involved with a 3mpm-like (inspired) cd exchange. 26 folks, 26 mixes via USPS (actual cds!), a new one in the mail every other week. The group wanted a theme. Up until that point, I was a fast-n-loose mixmaker. THEME? That was crazytalk. But I cow-towed to the masses and agreed to one theme. That's right: 26 mixes all with the same theme.

You know those times when someone says something snappy or snarky to you and about 5 hours later you think of the perfect comeback? Well, the aformentioned theme has been a brainworm; so often I'll think of songs that would have been perfect for that mix. So I challenged myself: could I make a mix that not only didn't have any songs from the 26 cd's of the same theme, but also didn't have any songs ever used in the 3mpm? Apparently I could. Should I have? Well, I'll leave that up to you.

What was the theme? Clues abound, my friends. (Ooh, let's make this a SWEEPSTAKES! Write your guess in the comments [even if someone else already wrote it]. All folks who guess correctly will get entered in a random drawing. What will you win? Your choice of: something hand-knitted by me [I'm a knitwear designer, but never knit for people, so this is a big deal], a homemade something [meal? soup? sweet? granola? limoncello? jam?], a random care package, or a mix cd [on cd!][heck, maybe even Pairs II]. You get to choose and it obviously depends on where you live if there's gonna be food involved. Post your guesses by March 13.)

I also am curious which song(s) you skip when listening to this.
Onward, Compatriots!

And, as always, Thank You Kelly!

I haven't listened yet, but those guys are all over it!I was thinking that H with two O's equaled water...

Chastity/Chaz is a red herring. He/she plays that role in many of life's mysteries.

John Wayne Gacy, Jr. has me thinkin' other angles. The Killer Clown was no "hoodlum." He was a crazy shit who brought great violence onto the objects of his hunger, as a few other characters in HHH seem so inclined.

At first listen I thought the Musikas song might tie into the gypsy/traveler/hobo idea. But that's Hungarian Jewish folk music, not gypsy. The subsequent Green Day song also rocks the Klez-bah. Connectivity thereabouts.

Dienfranchisement? Lust and unrequited love? Mixed-up violent weirdos? The theme is HUMAN LIFE ITSELF.

(Joke.)

If not pairs, how about triplets? Foursomes?

Then thre's the alliterative alphabet thang. The other project had 26 mixes, and Xtina gives us an all H-word title.

Hungarian music fits in that hash. Homicide and homelessness, too.

You guys are scaring me...

Dang, that's what I get for being out all day...not that I could have pulled it up as fast as Tim and Mike T.
I love Pre Chaz, though I was secretly jealous of her back when.

Christina, I can tell you I will not be passing over Crystal Waters! It is a proven favorite of mine!!

SB, J-M, et al: it's a random drawing, so even if someone else said it first, anyone can win! (J-M, r.e. Chastity, ME TOO!)

The name for H2O is water and not hydrogen oxide. There is no such molecule as hydrogen oxide (with one hydrogen atom and one oxygen atom). However, there is a polyatomic ion called hydroxide which is one hydrogen atom and one oxygen atom. So the theme here is obviously Vivian Vance.

Damn! I was thinking it was songs performed by blonde, goateed street urchins. Re-listening now...

H2O2s have more fun.

(Right, Danny Lee?)

Pulling the Mystery Machine to the side of the road now to burn a Scooby Snack with Shaggy...

HEY, I'm digging the music in this mix.

OK. Back on the case. So what did bring Crystal Waters and Green Day and Chaz Bono together here?

So loving this mix. Thank you. Not skipping any tracks, but repeating quite a few. (The Three O'Clock!)

also: love the track sequencing

I'm really bad at puzzles so I'll just say Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves and keep my fingers crossed for a pair of mukluks (size 10.5).

Really love the Richard Thompson and Dusty Springfield tracks. Hadn't heard any Three O'Clock in many years which should have been remedied sooner...

The Musikas was beautiful and got me to look up a translation of the Hungarian. And another surprisingly pleasurable experience with Fugazi courtesy of 3mpm-- quite a lot for one morning's listening! Thanks very much.

On the chemistry tip, you could also contract the title to HOHOHO and (ignoring the xmas-theme implications) get to H3O3, which is a trioxidanium cation:

+H2O-O-OH

I don't know if this helps.

Beeswing

Cant think of a better written song.

I am going to say the theme has to do with performing and living outside, the busker, the homeless singer, the gypsy , serenades and barbeques out in the pines, fire in the tube station trash can. So I am saying it is called the Street Performer, or campfire music. Although that makes Gacy a campfire horror story, however sensitively sung, never heard that before. Love the opening, Saw ol' Richard sing Beeswing at the Fillmore once and it slayed me, then he complained to the audience that he wasn't as famous as he should be! and he was right. And The B Levy takes me back, thanks for that, and for the mix, kud e'tat!

I am so happy to see Dusty Springfield, Fugazi and Mark Lanegan in the same mix. And I have a new respect for Green Day. I had no idea about that song. Thank you.

It shouldn't work, but somehow it does - such an interesting collision of artists!

I have to go with Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves. This is a wonderful mix. I love the flow from the first song to the fourth. "Suggestion" is one of my favorite Fugazi songs (and a great commentary on thievery, I think). The Lanegan song would have been an incredible bookend in its own right, except that Gacy is the perfect closer for this mix, ending with those two lines of ultimate introspection. Thanks!

I'm joining the Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves (+1 homicidal clown) chorus! Lots to love here - Beeswing is a perfect opener, I'm pleased to be reacquainted with the Three O'Clock and Barrington Levy, and the Jam never disappoints. Thanks!

Love the changes in tempo, love the width and breadth, love that some are old friends and others are brand spankin' new to me.

Faves: Beeswing, WIllie & Laura Mae Jones, Peacemaker, Here I Come.

Chemistry? What? I missed something. Maybe I need to develop a stronger BOND with this theme...(I apologize for subjecting you to that.)

Especially enjoyed the Three O'Clock, Fugazi and the Jam! And with a closer like Gacy, man does this mix stay with you afterwards.

I'm guessing the zero ipsays something about social status? Greg to see Richard Thompson, Dusty Springfield, Fugazi, Barrington Levy, and Sufjan all in one mix.

I had a really long, really nice comment and I just lost it in the proverbial ether, so I'll just say I loved the mix, enjoyed the theme hunt and was thrilled by memories of The Chameleons et al.

Awesome mix, SeƱorita Stork. I need to make sure I don't miss your next DJ gig!!!

An oh-so-late comment ... Excellent theme and excellent mix! The Sufgan Gacy lyrics creep me out — but I like it.
