Remember that time
A zagging Miracler made us a mix comprised of pairs of songs that made sense to her brain? Well, they definitely tapped into your collective wiring, too, because you guys took it and ran with it, with 19 comments including:
It takes balls to put Don Henley on the 3mpm. I have listened to this mix 3 times over since yesterday and I dig it and what you are doing here in "Pairs". / I have to say: Any mix with Boys of Summer has my vote. I shit you not. I may not be, you know, a Henley fan. But I do like me some Boys of Summer. Oh, that came out wrong..... And I dig what you're up to here — it's a kind of pedagogy. Yes yes, thank you. / Music aside, these are my favorite liner notes. After reading the intro, I couldn't download and get listening fast enough. The Warpaint song is a great find. And Head Over Heels reminds me why I loved Tears for Fears so much in high school. / Surprising how many of my colleagues recognized "Pop Goes My Heart" when I blasted it yesterday at the end of a long workday. Although they thought it was Rick Astley. / "Pairs" is all about beats, right? And the idea that music we love is often incredibly similar to music we dismiss? And that we should all just get along? In, I don't know...perfect harmony? Or maybe I'm wrong. / I would like to hear these mashups. And some sailorish street knowledge as counterpoint. / Is it wrong that I was most excited by Pop! Goes My Heart??? Yeah probably shouldn't have admitted that. But the video is almost as good as Rick Astley....sigh / A fun if controversial mix, Lady Stork. I too have experienced the similarity between tracks 1 & 2 during past listens of 2. / I think I have at least two of them after first listen: the warpaint/nirvana pair share some of the same lyrics (warpaint borrowing from nirvana) and the Hugh Grant/Tears for Fears pair I think has something to do with Hugh Grant's character being in a kind of Tears for Fears band... ? Jay-Z and Dan Auerbach: both part-owners of New Jersey Nets... both live in New Jersey... both love money. Both love each other... / Why am I the only non-artistic one in this entire project? Seriously, your album art is so beautiful, it's almost enough to forgive you for including the oft-mentioned Don Henley. Almost. / Totally loved the mix, totally love the concept behind it and --damn it, I must admit, I totally fell for Hugh Grant(?!?!?)'s "Pop! Goes My Heart". It's so well crafted, the parody is so well executed, it sounds like the real thing! Instant guilty pleasure. / I'm embarrassed to admit my dorkiness and say I was more into 'Dirty Laundry' once upon a time. But when I hear Don Henley now, I can only think of Mojo Nixon signing 'Don Henley Must Die'. / I'd be interested to hear your mash-ups when you do become a DJ, though Warpaint and Dum Dum Girls are mighty nice on their own. / You should seriously get to mash in'. Love this mix - it works on me like it works on you. Now I want some guacamole. / Let it be said that it's refreshing to see some familiar tunes. Empire State of Mind, Boys of Summer, Pop Goes My Heart: they're my musical grilled cheese sandwich. A delicious, guilty pleasure. / Pop Goes My Heart is the best Wham song ever. For some reason, it makes me want to listen to Physical by Olivia Newton John. Good job. / I like "Pop! Goes My Heart," but then again I like "That Thing You Do." Warpaint has a really good sound too. Out of nowhere, it's got a Johnny Marr guitar vibe. Thanks!
Now what's this Miracler gone and done? Oh, same thing. You got it: MORE PAIRS, luckies!

By popular demand*—PAIRS 2!
Still no explaining.
Still sailorish.
Still Don Henley.
* 'What the fuck?!' you exclaim. The only person who requested this was Pepe Verde, and he isn't even in The Prodge anymore.

WTF?! Pepe is not in the prodge anymore?!
Randy Scouse Git. Enough said. Xtina will tell you, that song alone is enough to make me fall in love with this mix.
Randy Scouse Git.
That, and Come and Get Your Love. Haven’t heard it since the last time I drove my mom’s car to the beach.
Thanks, Christina. More comments to come...
Looking forward to Pairs 2. I dug the first Pairs. I might not of demanded more in the comment box last time, but I was thinking it.
"I might not HAVE demanded more in the comment box last, but I was thinking it."
I'm filling up the comment box hopelessly trying to correct my own English — my first and only language. Ugh.
Christina, as soon as I saw your name, I knew I would dig this mix. I’ve been seeing the name Blood Orange, but I think this is the first time I’ve heard them. I dig it. Malcolm McLaren was just so deliciously weird. This is a perfect example. I’ve been a Fiona Apple fan since her first record. This is a great cut. She’s a unique talent. Bless the Monkeys. What a great song. I don’t think I’ve ever heard this Specials’ song. It’s really good. I struggled with The Dandy Warhols after watching DIG, but I’m back in the fold now. This song is a great example of their talent. Jagwar Ma, like Blood Orange is outside my normal comfort zone, but I really like it. I’m so happy to be listening to Digital Underground. They put out some great stuff other than Humpty Dance. What a great song. Haim is another band that I hear a bunch about, but I think this is my first experience. Great vocal work and super catchy. The Eagles took me back to being a passenger in some pickup in Indiana back in the late 70s. It’s a great memory. Redbone is the same. What a great song. Brenton Wood, wow. Such a great song and a great way to end this mix. Thank you so much, Christina.
Davey Jones Git! The Monkees should've been a trio. I've always loved Mickey Dolenz's singing. Michael Nesmith, too. Except for the chick-bait factor, the cute English accent, and the marracas, what did Davey add to the band? Bonus: And if Davey hadn't won fame in The Monkees, David Bowie could've kept his real last name. Oh yeah – fun pairing with "Little Bitch." Any excuse for The Specials is a good one.
"Bohemian Like You" could've paired with the Stones' "Heartbreaker." Maybe six or seven other Stones songs, too. It's got that "Shattered" slooshy bass sound, for one.
Not an Eagles fan... but they sure did have a way with hooks. Rampant sampling of the Eagles catalog might yet redeem them. (MIGHT.)
Thatnks for representing Oakland and multiple choice examinations with Digital Underground, Christina. Nice pairing with Jagwar ma, too. 'Scuze me now while I put on my plastic nose. Time to do some Humpty Dancing with Wes.
Mel Tormé is a better scat singer than Micky Dolenz...

The Velvet Frog [sic] is indeed that, Doug!
Some serious good taste here. Love the concept and EVERY DANG SONG. My favorite pairings are the Specials with their "Tubes World Tour" intro paired with the Dandy Warhols, who also channeled that Tubes cut, but as if done by Keith Richards. Heard Brown Sugar in that intro too.
And that last duo, with Redbone and Brenton Wood sent me right back to some Sadie Hawkins dance. Actually I only went to one so I should be able to name the year…1974?
Goodness gracious... "Hot Knife" – never heard it before. Great. (But she's too skinny.)
Here's a favorite "pairs" of mine. Actually, more of a straight up rip-off:

Check it.
I love Pairs and Avocados!
I never ever put Redbone and Brenton Wood's songs together, but both of them are real favs of mine. I actually put a Brenton Wood song on my very first 3mpm mix!
I do get the Blood Orange and Malcom comparison. I cannot help but add that, I will forever link "Madame Butterfly" with KSN and our freshman year of college. Oh yeah.
I do not get all of your pairs, but that is part of the fun, and I like it.
Except that Haim and the Eagles hurt badly! That's just me. As I have said on many occasions, "It has taken me years to hate that band (Eagles)."
I love the Jagwar Ma and Digital Underground combo!
All the same thank you Christina!
Love the concept, love the execution. I really enjoyed this, Xtina. Best new discovery for me here is the tune from Haim -- I love the idea of a band of sisters (kind of a fantasy of mine). The contrasts you put together managed to be thought-provoking and fun at the same time. Aweseome job!
Nice pairs! Sometimes I hear an old, familiar song in the Prodge that suddenly has a whole new feel to it thanks to the songs around it. Randy Scouse Git and Come and Get Your Love were really nice to hear again in a new context. Love the Blood Orange and the Jaguar Ma. Thanks for the introduction to both. Specials tune is brand new to me too. I'll say it again - nice pairs!
Loving this mix, from the way Blood Orange links to "Madame Butterfly" (a great track I had completely forgotten about) all the way through to the end. The pairing concept is brilliant.
OK...somehow my first listen to this iTunes had the order all mixed up and I thought "Holy smokes, i have NO CLUE what this Pair's Business is all about....Lady Stork is a mad genius and I am utterly confused!" But then I quickly realized something was up and the magic unfolded. LOVE this and love that you don't explain 'em. Such a crazy cool mix! Thank you again (and for the record, you're still a mad genius....)
Love the pairings. And the Redbone track is my favorite non-Randy-Scouse-Git song, hands down. Thanks, Xtina.
Thanks for this soundtrack of the last few weeks ("past few weeks"?). As ever, I love how your ears hear and notice and sequence tunes. One of the funny things to me about it is how i've got my own pairs for some of these songs, so I've got some triplets rattling around. Thx!
Christina you've taken a simple idea and spun it out in to a thing of beauty. Did you ever study fractals?
This might be your six word memoir. How many pairs? Infinite I imaging. But I really dig the HaiM and the Dandy Warhols. has everyone seen Dig! ? Fascinating documentary just like this mix.
Doug, you totally get it. I can totally hear the Pairs in all of your picks! Bonus: the John Grant tune's lyric use of the word 'callipygian'. Unlike 'Pairs I', this round I paid particular attention to Pairs that were different styles/eras, which you nail.
This Prodge season definitely seems to be the season of The Monkees. Sorry TC, but ... sigh ... Davey Jones: my first (and only) fan letter, written at age six to the address on the back of my Colgems record. My mom kindly didn't point out that the album was already eight years old and the likelihood of my getting a reply was slim. I think that letter must have simply been lost in the mail.
So nice to hear that so many of these song were enjoyed by y'all (although sorry Jeanne-Marie). And I really appreciate your appreciation of my weird ears. Avos 4Eva!!
