The Queen of 16th Street

Date:
September 8, 2008

Miracler:
Joni Gonzalez

Location:
San Francisco

Now here’s a gal who puts the fire in spitfire. By day a high-risk Labor & Delivery RN, she quiets that adrenaline rush in her off-hours with uh, more adrenaline rushes. While others of us choose to recreate in front of electronic devices, Joni’s out there stirring stuff up–sculling, surfing, snowboarding, skiing on water....Oh and here’s another S: storytelling. And how. If you ever find yourself in a room with Joni, after you're finished admiring her hair (you’ll see), have her regale you with one of the workplace tragicomedies she witnesses daily. My favorite is the manic new mom who went AWOL moments after her C-section and where they found her. But there are other classics. Invite her to your next party and you’ll see. She’ll have your guests in stitches. The good kind.

Some Joni-approved fun links for your downtime at work: here's one, here's another, this is good too, and you'll also dig this.

Joni, I'm not just saying this because you slipped not only a gigantic candy bar but also a box of Red Vines AND Pop Rocks (how prescient!) in with your 3MPMP stuff for me.

Your mix is FUUUUUUN, girl! It's like a tumbling snowball of catchy popness. And somehow, you've managed to create a safe haven for enjoying David Lee Roth. Now that's a Miracle.

XOK

So much to love here Joni, starting with the dead pigeon in high heels, moving into nuggets of many-flavored goodness. I love TV. Destroy, Apache, Flying Saucer Attack, and much more. I have a 45 of Alice Cooper's Clones (We're All) gathering dust somewhere. The whole effort brings me back to my high school years when I was jeered at and called a fag by the football players for my taste in music and my penchant for skinny ties and stovepipe trousers. Good times, good times...

Biff, Bang, Pow! I'm seeing Red with Purple Flashes. Nice mix.

Thanks Kelly!
I'm shocked I created a safe haven for Eartha Kitt & Motorhead on the same mix...Your project is inspiring!

PS-I'd rather be delivering candy. Hope you got to break out that giant Symphony bar at the symphony...I love props! That, I would have loved to have seen.
Rock on!

Stephen, Thanks-
The dead pigeon modeling shoes...it's the best found art ever!
My friend Steve E. took this photo on his cell phone outside his bar, Skylark on 16th. I give him full artistic credit, but the stylist remains unknown.
Glad you are enjoying the mix!
XxOo Joni.

Flying Saucer Attack, Motorhead and Biff, Bang Pow!?

I love it already and I haven't even listened to it yet! Can't wait until I get home!

I especially like the Eartha Kitt & IBongoB songs. And that's Iggy Pop's best song since "Butt Town." At least.

Wow Joan, you're mix makes me angry! Any mix that manages to incorporate Queen, Peggy Lee and the Knack deserves some sort of prize.

Derek!
You're a tough act to follow.
I'm glad that you spared Apache, I was sure you'd snag that tune!
I love that my mix makes you ANGRY. That means it's good....real good! And I love that you're the only friend who calls me Joan. (It's so NY of you!)
XxOo Joni.

Joni (may I call you Joan?) - Fantastic mix.

I mean, seriously, it was all over the place, and it still managed to work. I'm happily married, and yet I feel the need to meet you. It was that good.

Thanks Doug!
XxOo Joan.

Awesome Mix, Motorhead buddy!!

Seriously digging the Queen, Alice Cooper, and the Peggy Lee wrap up is super sweet, no pun..whatever. You made a safe haven for these sonic terrorists, and I do think it makes me miss 16th street. Great job.

Thanks Brian!
I loved Ace of Spades on your mix. That song's always good to hear, and still reminds me of their live performance on the Young Ones! Hallarious!
Glad you like the mix.

Hey Joni,

I have been a bit behind, and I just downloaded your mix. I had to write before I even listened to it.

He's a whore is THE Best C. Trick song ever! and Clones, well, I was so going to put that on my first 3mpm back in 2002. I love Eartha KItt. Sheer Heart Attack, bringing me back to 8th grade!

Lots to love on this mix!

Awesome Joni!

I love that early Cure stuff. I have a cassette of that punky/shitty recording stuff.

Thanks!

I just want to say thanks for this mix. I got your Lounge mix and enjoyed it immensely. I like this mix even more. Individually, many of the songs I just couldn't admire very well. Yet, together they all sound like gems. That's the tone of a good mix. Who'd of thunk I could better appreciate music with the help of Diamond Dave?
