Last time you heard from Monnix
Was in Nov. '09, when he brought us Power Pop Vol. 11, recipient of such comments as, "Fun tracks on this! The Swervedriver and Poster Children numbers were new to me, and I liked them a lot," and "am already STOKED by the presence of not one, but two Mark Lanegan band inclusions. So dreamy, so right!" and "Thanks for the fun mix and great liner notes" and "Cool mix" and "Dig the kid art." Today Monnix hits us with a less-rocky/more-poppy mix featuring, among other great tracks, a Luna song I've managed to never hear but already love, a classic Feelies song I can't believe hasn't made it to the Prodge before and yet it hasn't, and something fun by a lot of Miraclers' secret faves, the La's. Oh, and our first presence of Elvis Presley in decades. I've had this mix on a lot the past few days and can tell you you're in for a treat. Enjoy.

Liner notes from MJ
1. Randy Described Eternity - an analogy put to song, nay, OPUS! What more could a person ask for?

2. A Little Less Conversation - those of you who've played "Just Dance" on the Wii will know all the moves to this one! If only Elvis had this back-beat in all his songs...

3. It's Only Life - isn't it though? An excellent road-trip song...and album!

4. Halling Jaron - apparently this is a traditional Swedish song...but with a "modern" twist. The entire album is haunting and brilliant.

5. Deep Red Bells - This and the next song are dedicated to The Republic of Cascadia and Neko Case, our Cascadian siren...long live the Republic and Neko!!

6. Mass Romantic - The Vancouver BC "super group" with Neko Case at the helm! Cascadia rulez!!

7. Invincible - This is the "treadmill" band made famous by their YouTube video, but I liked the song so much I bought the CD and lo-and-behold, it's great. This song in particular, is the best "been dumped" song I've heard in a long time.

8. Slash Your Tires - How can a song sound so pretty yet be so mean?

9. Eva - Rhythms and syncopation...if this song doesn't get your booty boppin', nothing will!

10. Pack Yr Romantic Mind - I love the way this song builds in intensity, goes off the deep end, then pulls it back together.

11. Destroy Everything You Touch - "...great song, great beat, I give it a 15..."

12. Timeless Melody - The songs on this album sound so familiar to me...I think they should've been much more successful than they were.

Mix is up. Listen and comment. And then comment on others. Cuz that's the deal. See you back here or on our members-only Facebook page.
Until next week,
XOK

Oh, yeah -- I have so been waiting for some Built to Spill to surface, and this song is one of my favorites. Also vintage Luna and lots of other great stuff I know will become part of my summer listening repertoire. Thanks, Monnix!

I liked your notes and how we had to open up the mix to see what was inside. It is crazy hot here in Chicago and I needed a super fun pop mix to help cool off! Thanks!

Two Neko songs, two thumbs. And Luna. So simple, yet so good. And is it me, or does the opening to the Garmana song want to go into "...ground control to Major Tom..."?

Thanks Monnix.

Ever since "The September Issue," "Destroy Everything You Touch" never fails to put me in Anna Wintour mode.

(And that's OK).

"Deep Red Bells" was the first Neko Case song I ever heard. Still wows. Good segue for the Pornographers. That Stereolab song goes so well with the Ladytron following it. Love the "I give it a 15" assessment, Monnix.

@Kevin: Ha! "Ground Control for Major Swede"? The song is great.

Built to Spill—nice sludgy opener. And at 6 minutes, a bold move. I imagine that Garmana is what Calexico would sound like if they were based in Malmö. Great hearing New Pornographers and Neko Case back-to-back. Why hasn't one of us done a NP band member mix yet? And wait—what?... The LA's recorded a song other than "There She Goes"? Do tell.

Thanks, Monnix!

Special thanks for built to spill and the Feelies, odd ball dinner guests that they were...ha ha!

I listened to this while doing dishes that had been piling up for too long. This put some pep in my scrubbing. Highlights for me: Built to Spill, The Feelies, Luna, the Neko double-whammy, and the horn sounds on Ozomatli. Thank you sir.

I totally, thoroughly loved this mix. I mean, Luna! Built To Spill! Feelies! Neko (times two)! Stereolab! Ladytron! It was like, wham! bam! BLAAM!
I must say though, is that Junkie XL reworking Elvis? I didn't see that coming mate, I thought we'd kept that secret in Europe. Ouch. ;-)
But then, you closed with 'Timeless Melody': You are forgiven, my son!!! :-)
Thank you Monnix, we need more of this.

Love the double dose of Neko. And the Garmarna tune is incredible.

Fun and educational for me, Monnix. Big Luna fan. And I really like two songs I never would've picked up on my own - Ozomati and Stereolab.
