Miracler
Lauren Barr

Location
San Francisco

You know Lauren

Because in Dec. '09 you started listening to Is This Thing On—a lot, at least in our house (on both stereos). And then you came here and left comments ranging from, "I am digging this in every respect," "This may be my favorite mix so far this season–thanks!," "Oh yeah this thing is on!! Rockin' mix!," "Really wonderful stuff here—this mix is seamless," "Great mix—hadn't realized how deeply that Bomba Estereo tune had infiltrated my summer, but it brought back a lot of recent, fond memories. Thanks!," to "Lauren—will you marry me?" That last one came from Doug Patterson, and was followed up by her "Oh Doug, I thought you'd never ask!" So there you go—another happy couple of customers. And after spending some QT with this week's offering, I suspect our Miracler will be deluged with proposals yet again.

Liner Notes from LB

If there's a theme here it is "Return to the Album". Many of these songs are from whole albums I've been enjoying lately.

* 1 Seven Nation Army, Ben L'Oncle Soul

The whole self-titled album has been on repeat over here for months. Son vrai nom est Benjamin Duterde, est un chanteur français né en 1984, originaire de Tours.

* 2 Bizness, Tune-Yards

Merril Garbus is the boss of me. When those horns come in again at the end of this song I want to cheer, and if I'm alone in the car I do. W H O K I L L is my favorite album of 2011 and it's only July.

* 3 Two Against One, Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi

Awesomeness = Jack White + original Spaghetti Western soundtrack musicians

4 Black River Killer, Blitzen Trapper

Okay, I'm running out of steam on the liner notes portion already... This song is dark and creepy but I love it so.

5 Face In The Crowd, Cat's Eyes

Um... I quite like his deep voice and the reinterpretation of 60's sound. What's going on with that, btw?

*6 Saw You First, Givers

Note the juxtaposition. (this always worked in art school...)

7 Ambling Alp, Yeasayer

"Oh Max Schmelling was a formidable foe" --No one saw that lyric coming-- Anecdotally, the Ambling Arp was the moniker of the Italian boxer Primo Carnera. However, he and Schmelling never met in the ring, just so ya know.

*8 Never Heal Myself, Cults

This whole album is pretty great too. Breezy and dark.

*9 Can't Help But Smiling, Devendra Banhart

His middle name is Obi, like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

10 Moon Over Montana, Jimmy Wakely

JImmy Wakely, the cowboy crooner.

*11 Sore Spores, Bobby

This song is so dreamy and summery, from another album that I'm loving these days. Is anyone else weary of the shuffle?

*12 The Last Prom on Earth, Gayngs

Thanks Bon Iver, your rampant hipstertude and fromage-adjacency is still very appealing. (All the songs on this great album were recorded at 69 bpm) (no comment)

*just get the whole thing

Mix is up. Listen and comment. And then comment on others. Cuz that's the deal. See you back here or on our members-only Facebook page.
Until next week,

Lauren-- just opening your mix now and need to give Big Thanks for including "Two Against One" on your mix. Awsomeness, indeed!

All my friends love tune yards. Excuse me, tUnE-YarDs. All the critics too. Everyone. Except me. What am I missing? Someone please tell me. I feel so alone. Once we figure this out, we can turn our attention to James Blake.

Another stunner, Lauren—thanks. I'm not sure if I mentioned it last time, but I'm married. I'm convinced there's got to be a way around this little speed bump, however. We'll be in touch...

Lauren, you've preseneted such a set of conttradictions here. Blitzen Trapper gave the song happier music than the lyrics deserve. Love it. Sore Spores sounds kind of gross but the tune is beautiful. And what the hell is Jimmy Wakely even doing here? (I'm really glad he stopped by).

I just finished my fourth straight listen.

Black River Killer has been a steady listen for me most of 2011, and it's inclusion here was a welcome one. [Danny Lee's comment makes me think of Peter Greenaway: grotesque beauty]

I've heard about Bobby for a while now, but hadn't gotten a chance to check it out yet—thanks, loving it and putting it on my got to get list. Same with 'Two Against One' ... might have to put that song on loop for a bit.

Loving how this mix, while all over the place, also has a meandering line through it that holds it all together.

And "fromage-adjacency" may be my most favorite descriptor in recent history. So. Hilars.

Thanks Lauren!

Great mix, Lauren! Listened twice thru. Jimmy Wakely gets 5 stars. Several others I would love to explore further. Thanks!

Hey thanks everyone!

Kellen, I'm with you on the James Blake. It's a total head-scratcher for me too. Tuneyards however, hits me right where I live. Thanks for the video link.

Doug, Hang tight buddy, I'm sure we can make this work. (btw, I continue to love Black Like Me)

Glad to hear that xtina found the meandering line in the contradictions, and that Danny stuck with it. <3 <3 Jimmy <3 <3

Now I am more interested in James Blake...I get the chance to see him tomorrow night at pitchfork! that is if I forgo Neko Case to see him. hmmmm....
Lauren, this looks super great, as soon as I saw that you were the one responsible for "is this thing on?" I got excited, and your d.i.y. cover art is also very enticing!
more soon indeed.

Really, really good. I'll play these again and again.

Jeanne Marie, a James Blake show is pretty easy to re-create at home. Just get yourself a Casio and every four or five seconds, hit one of the keys. But only one.

I'll actually be at Pitchfork this weekend, too. Look for me. I'll be the one in skinny jeans.

Okay, it's official: for every future Lauren Barr mix, I'm just gonna 5-star the whole thing before listening and save the wrist work.

Thanks for another incredible mix, lady! Loooooving it.

I agree with everyone. I've been loving this as well! In fact, I just put it on again which reminded me I hadn't commented.

Thanks Lauren, a lot of new artists to me. Though I've heard, it I hadn't spent much time with tUnE yArDs. Put me in the"like" column for them. Other nice surprises... Givers, Bobby (interesting band name) name checkin' Chuck E. Cheese. Nice. The Blitzen Trapper song is great. So great that they haven't risen to that occasion again (IMO). Good summer mix!

The cover art is as fine as the mix inside. Seven Nation Army cover = toe-tappin goodness.

Boy I've been missing the good stuff. Good mixes lately!
Loving this one, plenty of tuneage and a couple of things I'd only recently heard of but not actually knew much about (tUnE-yArDs, yes! Givers, wow!).
Funny, I have another band somewhere doing a soul version of '7 Nation Army'; the truth is that style suits the song well. But then again, I must say I saw Carl Cox deejaying once and he played a techno version of it and it also sounded good, so it must just be that it is an awesome song, period. Definitely up there with the greatest killer riffs in rock history.
And finally, I totally loved that you closed with Gayngs, one of my latest guilty pleasures. Classy.
Thanks Lauren!!!

This mix is a keeper from top to bottom. The Blitzen Trapper is my favorite of the new surprises. Thanks!
