They Call Him Mister Tibbs
as a sign of respect for the dude who in Sept. '10 gave us the awesomeness of Go Go Power, about which y'all said, "Thanks for the time machine, Dave. Dolly Parton was a hippy" and "Wow, the fall party mix has arrived! This is just fantastic" and "Must resist giving it out to random children as a Halloween treat" and "Thanks for resuscitating that Hollies track–solid gold. We can always count on Tibby to bring the fun" and "Piccolo Pupa is rocking my world!" and "The drum break in the middle of Good Sweet Loving was worth the price of admission itself" and "Dude, I love your mixes." Then in May '08 Mr. Tibbs sent us the nugget How Does Your Light Shine which got "Would make a good soundtrack. Maybe the prequel to 'Midnight Cowboy'" and "Aaoowooooooooooo, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea!"
Today Mr. Tibby brings us some wall-to-wall psyche pop from the middle of a psych pop volcano. Don't worry, he's a great guide, having as he does his own show of this stuff on Mutiny Radio, on which you can hear Pop Psychology Radio with Dave Tibbs on Saturdays between 12 & 2pm PST. (Shout Out, Tibby, for playing Spicks and Specks last weekend!) To hear his shows, friend him here and listen in a stream from his FB page—or download it. You can also choose from past shows of his here.
He's also got some super-groovy stuff coming up on his show:
Saturday, Sept. 24th - Interview with 60's rock music historian RICHIE UNTERBERGER! He'll be talking about his new book Won't Get Fooled Again: The Who from Lifehouse to Quadrophenia!
Saturday, October 1st - 2 hours of female vocalists from the 60's!
Saturday, October 15th - Neil Martinson of SMiLE and the Mission Creek Music Festival co-hosts the show with me!
Mix is up. Listen and comment. And then comment on others. Cuz that's the deal. See you back here or on our members-only Facebook page.
Until next week,
XOK

Honestly and truly I listened to how does your light shine earlier today and thought, "Where has Dave Tibbs been - isn't he due for a mix?"
It's true that I have a some psychic genes somehow, but I also hold on to the Tibb's mixes.
Looking forward to hearing this one!
This is an amazing collection. Now I can't wait to hear the radio show. Thanks Dave.
A true pop-sike extravaganza, with only three dupes in my library.
Great stuff! Really liked the Tikis and the Folklords. Loved how the Aquarians went off into actual weirdness in the last third. What's the second part of the Vamp track?
Ah, Fritz found the hidden track. It's Black Fjord from Kaleidoscope (uk) off their under rated 2nd album Faintly Blowing from 1969. The singer, Peter Daltrey just played at Du Nord and opened with Snapdragon. F'ing amazing.
Thanks for the kind words you guys! My apologies for not providing liner notes...I've been working like a dog for the past few weeks and just couldn't get it together. I wonder if I can just post them here?
By the way, The Tikis were from Santa Cruz and became Harpers Bizarre. The Folklords were great...I interviewed the main singer/songwriter Tom Waschkowski about a month ago on my show...its podcasted in mutinyradio.org but I forget which show it was...listen to them all haha!

Wow. It might have been problematic for our Hostess, but it's definitely worth the trouble—all 21 of 'em. Thanks, Dave (and Kelly). Please tell me that these didn't all come from a Rhino Records "British Invasion Volume 87" collection.
One nit: I burned a CD for the car with a second between songs, but oddly, the gap occurs before the song ends—near the end, but not at the end. So each song has a quick break in it. What gives? I'm curious about how these tracks were originally formatted.
uhm...there shouldn't be a gap at all...i just plugged my cd burner into my dj mixer/turntables and manually marked the tracks. i'm sure i was off a bit cuz i was trying to cue the songs up and mark the tracks at the same time...not an easy feat for this fumbling dj.
some of these tracks were taken from compilations and most were from the original LPs and 45s.
to be clear: there shouldn't be a gap between songs because i mixed this live on my turntables...the songs are supposed to blend from one to another with no gaps. i don't really know, but maybe there is a setting on your computer that will allow you to eliminate the gap? i've only used itunes a couple of times but i seem to remember a setting that affects that.
Ahh, that explains it. When I listen in iTunes there's no problem. And burning a gapless CD, obviously, will work too.
I got the gaps while listening on the pod. Haven't listened directly from itunes yet.
Thanks, Dave, a lot of good stuff, none of which I had. I particularly like the almost mechanical groove of Thane Russell's 'Security'.
When I saw how Dave had created the mix to run uninterrupted, I double-checked the set-up of the mix so that there wouldn't be gaps. But you know iTunes and how impenetrable it is to the desires of the human heart...
Sam, thanks man! Yeah, that cover of Security is amazing...originally an Otis Redding song.
Dave, this is a real education. Lots of Googling. Love the Tikis' jangle and the traces of the Who and Moby Grape in Tintern Abbey. Aquarians - so 1969 yet so now. And I really love Kak. Did I just say that?
You sent me back in time and blew my mind. Excellent. Thanks.
20 quality tunes from folks I've never heard of. That's why I'm here. Thanks.
Dude. Dude. Duuude! The Smoke --holy smoke! You're like the third or fourth person I know that knows them... And that is not the most obscure band here it seems. What about that Otis Redding cover! Amazing.
This is so up my alley, thank you so much. Will have to listen to your show I guess!
Extra appreciation goes to the sweet sound of your needle as it caresses those vinyls, gotta love it --and an actual DJ mix at that. You da man.
Can I come hang out? :-)
OMG Kak! hadn't heard that in forever.
Got a spare copy? I'm missing that...
Just came up for air and downloaded this psychin' mix, a week or two after the fact. Wowee-kazowee! A feast of rarities. All news to me except for two bands. /// I love "Red Sky at Night." Skip Bifferty feels like a tween of early mod Who and Cream-y amped-up blues. Looked them up in Wikipedia. The bands personnel ends up playing with Alvin Lee, Ginger Baker, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison... and Ian Dury and The Blockheads! /// The Fleur De Lys (along with Harper's Bizarre, one of the two band's I had any familiarity with) sure sound great. That "Hold On" song moves. Guilty pleasure? Sharon Tandy's voice weirdly reminds me of Heart's Ann Wilson. Where did the cover image come from, Dave? /// The Aquarians' jazzy thing feels like a weird fit, but I really, really dig it.
P.S. "They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!" is a movie I haven't seen since it came out, 40 million years ago. How's the soundtrack?
I like this so far quite a bit on first listen. Sounds like you dove in deep!
This mix is fantastic. I love Otis Redding's Security, and Thane Russell not only takes nothing away from it, but transforms it nicely. Also especially liked Anymore than I Do by the Attack quite a lot. There are no misses in this mix for me. Thanks.
Hi everybuddy...thanks for all the notes about my mix. Got a few comments about Kak, I see. If you can find their album, I really recommend it...every song on it is amazing. It was re-issued on vinyl maybe 5 years ago and is available on CD as "Kak-Ola". They were from Davis, CA! The singer/songwriter/guitarist Gary Lee Yoder went on to play guitar in Blue Cheer...he still lives in Davis and occasionally still plays with the Gary Lee Yoder Band at county fairs and such. I haven't seen him play but I want to...wanna track him down for an interview on my radio show, too, but have been unsuccessful so far.
Tim asked where I got the image for the cover...it's from a Peter Max poster...not sure of the year, but late 60's. I actually cut and pasted with scissors and a Prang glue stick to put the title on it...not that I wouldn't have used Photoshop if I could have. Nice research on Skip Bifferty, btw.
One last plug for my show:
Pop Psychology Radio on www.mutinyradio.org
Every Saturday 12pm-2pm PST
On this week's show: about 90 minutes of mostly quiet psych...that's just how I'm feeling this week. Plus an interview with the director of the new movie Blood, Sweat and Vinyl: DIY in the 21st Century!
Bye and thanks again for all the comments!
