Miracler:
Brian Cooney
Location:
Richmond, CA
About Brian:
Brian Cooney is a big lovable bear of an Irish American guy, conceived at the intersection of Jimmy Cagney and Jimmy Stewart. He’s got a beatific smile, a few kids, an iceberg-blue-eyed wife, a fab spread in Richmond, a job dealing with money matters of some sort, and a crazy knack for whipping up fine meals for his friends. In fact, I move that the next dinner party be held at Cooney’s house. Now we just have to figure out how to get to Richmond.
Brian's Liner Notes:
1. Soul Heart Transplant: Ebony Rhythm Band
"Let's get the weird organ shit out of the way first"
2. Beautiful Dreamer: Mates Of State
"It's Mates of State, it makes me happy"
3. Circa: Death Vessel
"This is the funniest band name, especially since that is a GUY singing. Really. Death Vessel is on tour with The Sea and Cake right now. I heard this in the record store, and after it came on some other loud song came on at this time I asked the clerk lady- "Hey, who was that last song?" And she said "Death Vessl" and I couldn't hear her and i thought she said "Rugged Muscle" and I said- that's a funny name and she said "yeah- and thats a GUY singing". He must get that alot."
4. Meltdown: Slobberbone
"I heard them play live at Starry Plough in Berkley a few years ago and bought this CD- I like it a lot, and I hope you do too. Kinda like the Pogues meet some other Pogues."
5. Clean Hands. Dirty Hands: Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
"It's Nick Cave and it's on a soundtrack, so it is like that."
6. Color And Kind: The Moore Brothers
"Those wacky Moore brothers."
7. Javelin: Simon Joyner
"Not all of his songs are like this, which is unfortunate. "So goodbye great plains, hello earthquake"- niice
8. Investigator's Groove: Calypso King & The Soul Investigators
This is a from a great compilation "Soul Fire: The Majestic Collection" This is one of the deeper funk numbers, kinda Meters-esque. Meterian?
9. God Bless Texas: Paul Heaton
Kinda hard to imagine that the guy behind this is also behind "Song for Whoever" later in this mix, but it is. "Now the Old Jim Crow is just an ordinary guy in a Lexus" — brilliant.
10. Passion Play: Papas Fritas
I meant to put this song on my last 3mpm, can't remember why not, (if you say it sucks then I will probably remember why).
11. Going Down South: R.L. Burnside
Mad stomping blues. Burnside's son plays guitar in North Missipis Allstars track below ""Someday Baby"
12. Rebel Rebel: Seu Jorge
Y'all probably already got this one somewhere in your collection, but if just one person is introduced to Seu here, then it's worth it.
13. The Message: Cymande
I guess I have been listening to a lot of funk lately.
14. Work Is Never Done: The Futureheads
The Futureheads are on heavy rotation during "get shit done around the house" time.
15. Moretime: Nightmares On Wax
After getting shit done, ya gotta GET SOME SHIT DONE. Yeahhhhh, that’s right.
16. Song For Whoever (Single): The Beautiful South
"I love you from the bottom of my pencil case" ahh, shucks I am just a sucker for this.
17. Someday Baby: North Mississippi Allstars
Saw 'em live with Robert Randolph, and this recording captures a lot of the energy of that performance. And the apple doesn't fall far from the tree (see RL Burnside) , and that’s not a bad thing in this case.
18. River Day: Rainywood
Another one of those "I heard it playing in the record store" purchases that has ended up getting a lot of play. But the word "rainbow" does appear in this song about 5 times.
19. The Tape: Sondre Lerche
A shake out the cobwebs romp with Sondre- what a contrast to the PCH Sondre song too!
20. Tether: Damien Jurado
Another purchase prompted by a live show, I saw Damian play in the basement of a church in Berkeley a few years ago, having never heard any of his tunes. me likey

Yeah, those 2 Sondre Lerche songs are really different from each-other but both good. I also like the S Joyner, P Heaton, Rainywood, etc. Thanks!
Signed,
- Sam
That Sondre Lerche song is so great. Before the PCH and muddied water, I had never heard of him.
I might have been better off not knowing that a Guy is singing the Death Vessel song, but alas, I have already gotten into a routine of listening to it first thing in the morning. '
My boys seems to dig eating lunch Going Down South.
thanks for this mix
Let's see... There's always room for a little weird organ shit. No way that's a guy fronting Death Vessel. From whence comes the Nick Cave song? Me likey. I bought "Soul Strike!" on the strength of "Investigator's Groove" - these guys are Finnish? Jesus. R.L. Burnside (new to me) makes me glad we opened up this thing beyond pop. Great stuff. "Moretime" - ditto. Sondre Lerche is just adorable, isn't he? The Damien Jurado track was a nice outro - does he have to pay Sam Beam royalties every time he sings?
