The Heartbreak Diet

Date:
April 27, 2009

Miracler:
Thorina Rose

Location:
San Francisco

About this week’s Miracler and mix
When life handed Thorina Rose a (philandering French) lemon, she squeezed out the bitter & the sweet and turned the juice into graphic novel lemonade. Entertainment Weekly calls The Heartbreak Diet “the thoughtful real-life tale of a San Francisco artist starting over with two young children after her French husband's très gauche midlife defection to a younger woman. Rose’s piquant, witty drawings accompany a story that retains a hopeful levity without veering into self-pity or bitterness.”

Talk about a creative catharsis: Thorina’s story is a Chronicle Books hit and now we all get a fantastic soundtrack out of it. Mix is here.

Have a grand week, all,
XOK

Nice, Thorina! Bittersweetness. Chocolate without milk, the best fix. Not sure what Rufus Wainwright's thoughts on the subject would be, however.

Huh? The lead song is by 90s Euro-smash La Bouche? Doughnuts to dollars that the version posted here is actually the original I Can't Stand The Rain done by by Ann Peebles back in 1973.

Love that autoharp'd Sea of Love by Cat Power. Ending with Dietrich is perfekt.

Tim, Dang—I'm sure you're right about the singer of the first track. My fault. The disk was missing some info so I lazy-Googled it.

Fixing/replacing mix now to correct blunder.

Yeah, Dietrich is indeed the perfect ending. Thanks, Thorina!

Top notch! Very nice selection; always happy to have some more Aimee Mann in the collection. Loved the Al Green too.

What an excellent mix. So much to like: Dylan (wasn't familiar w/ that song), Brassens (new to me), Wainwright (1st song of his I've liked), TJ (old fave), Patsy Cline (good segue from the TJ song), The Vejtables (new to me -- Pandora says there's no "I" in Vejtables, btw), Lila Downs (though I can't understand what she's singing), etc.

Thanks, TR!

And another thing: that Dwight Yoakam song is a classic for the ages (fact, not opinion), and it's about time that guy made it into our exclusive club. Congratulations, Sir Yoakam.

Thanks for video link, Sam! Didn't know the Vejtables/Mojo Men connection previously...

Now that I'm able to pick myself up off of the floor, let me congratulate you, Thorina, for a very fine - albeit emotionally draining - mix. At the risk of sounding, uhm... sensitive, I gotta say that the Rufus Wainwright track was the highlight for me.

(And Sam, I think "Vegitables" is the Yogi Bear pronunciation.)
