You remember Alix: Remember that girl whose mix totally made your last summer?
The same. In July '11, she gave us Almost Ready, an insta-hit with the in crowd, prompting a cool 28 comments with sentiments like, 'I feel like I could make my 3MPM comment-minimum quota just on this mix alone. It's been a long time since I looped one mix *this* many times! I! Love! It!', 'This mix is like the dream where you visit your favorite old-time amusement park or boardwalk, and finish it off with a root beer float or a tin roof sundae,'  'Sorry I haven't commented on this mix before—I was busy having parties to it!', 'Great little summertime mix! Makes me smile at the hot weather. Can't get The Boat That I Row out of my head, though...', 'Nice stuff. Had to wait til Mrs. Fritz left for work to dance around the house but it was worth it,' 'I'm loving these songs. Great mix, nice flow. The Caesars song has an Oasis-gone-Gidget quality that I'm liking. Fun fun fun,' 'As noted, it's just a perfect summer mix. I'm buying a convertible and heading to the beach immediately, these songs a-blaring. And, nice to hear a B3 workout from a fellow Miracler. Thanks, Alex!' 'Hey, Me I'm Riding! I haven't listened to it in forever...the first notes I am transported back, somewhere. Somewhere good, 'cause I can't quite grasp what or where. Loving, good, hipshaking,' 'Fun! Fun! Fun!', 'Hotel Easy. I want to stay in that hotel. Thank you for reminding us that life doesn't have to be complicated,' 'This is such a great summer mix. I made the college girl in the Faygo T-shirt sitting next to me on the plane listen to it. Will be forcing this on co-workers and cousins for months. Well done!' 'Never heard of any of this stuff. Sodsai is a revelation, Hotel Easy is a groove and Lee Hazelwood is just so suave. Good work!', 'Caesars kick ass! More Swedish rock please. One swell mix, and excellent CD as cover art hand lettering,' 'This is what 3MPM is all about--catchy, themed, upbeat. Inspired a mini-dance at my house,' 'You have struck so many chords here. You've made a mod man cry. Thanks a lot and congrats on such good taste! Now I gotta go talc my hardwood,' 'This mix is fantastic! Every song makes me happy,' 'Loved Hotel Easy and the rest of the mix. It transported me back to a previous life passion of thrift store hunting, rolling down the road in my '64 Valiant, PBR, and summertime in Sac Town!' 'The Fitz track is a real hit—it jumped out as something like crack, kinda special and kept needing one more hit of it.' Lotta exclamation points in that list, eh?

Then a few months later, she was also there to get you through the holiday season, with A Holly-Jolly Christmas Mix, about which you offered many other flattering things, things Your Hostess only wishes she had wrist strength left to copy/paste. But instead, let's move to today. Why, look at the calendar, friends. It's time again for both white tennis shoes and a new Alix Summer Mix! Let's listen in to what's been playing on auto-repeat at 3MPM HQ since the weekend.

Liner Notes from Alix

"NO TURNING BACK"
A while back I stumbled upon a funky collection of photos—mug shots of lady criminals from the 60s. There was one in particular that I couldn't stop staring at. Carol Andrews. Arms folded. Hair up to "there". And the perfect pouty scowl on her face. As I was pulling songs as potential mix contenders, I suddenly realized many of them kind of went perfectly with that photo. I've never really made a mix based on a photograph before, so I thought why the cuss not. And no, I didn't include Bonnie & Clyde (although I love a little Serge & Bardot). As for Carol Andrews. I have no clue what she was in for. But whatever it was, I'm sure she and her boyfriend didn't do it.

1. Another One Goes By. The Walkmen
2. While You Were Sleeping. Elvis Perkins
3. Childhood. Beach House
4. Robbers. Cold War Kids
5. Oh! My Mama. Alela Diane
6. No Turning Back. Sarah Blasko
7. Crazy For You. Best Coast
8. Hunt You Down. Archie Bronson Outfit
9. Be Gentle With Me. Boy Least Likely To
10. Once and Never Again. The Long Blondes  {I know. This is the one track that doesn't really fit. And I almost took it out. But then I thought, eh....gotta rebel somewhere on this here thang. And really, Carol Andrews would want it that way.}
11. Just Dial My Number. Jeremy Jay
12. Til the End of Time. DeVotchKa

Great mix + fabulous cover Alexandra!
Elvis Perkins is threatening to make an appearance on my mix as well. Thank you!

Well done. I see the classic convertible ambling across the desert with our heroine and her troubled boyfriend the end of this movie, riding into freeze frame as credits roll...which reminds me how much I loved that first Cold War Kids album. What happened to them? The other big stand out for me was Devotchka (which I need to do my homework on). Thanks!

Alexandra - this mix is so gorgeous! Start to finish and on a continuous loop. I know a couple of the artists / bands, but there is lots of new stuff too. I love Elvis Perkins and Alela Diane and Sarah Blasko. It is all so very very great.

Thanks!

I also have to thank you for the cover. Having a clear view of this hairstyle from both angles, I think I have a better understanding of how this kind of thing works. Clearly it cannot be done with out big rollers and an hour spent under a hair dryer. Carol Andrews knows, and now I do too.

When I got the email yesterday and saw it was you, I thought "Sweet! An Alix mix!", remembering all the albums I got last year as a result of 'Almost Ready'.

Downloaded the mix and took a quick glance as I was getting ready this morning. "The Walkmen, excellent!" (And then decided to let that plan my outfit, it being one of my fave show tees. So you also coordinated my ensemble today, thanks.) Listening, track list unseen, I kept thinking the same thing: "awesome, I love this band!" Extra bonus that you selected songs that weren't my regular go-to's, so all the more fun. Then a song would come on by and band I wasn't familiar with, but sandwiched between two favorites. I have a feeling every one of those bands will have albums bought by me within the month (Sarah Blasko, in particular. I'm not so familiar with her, but she reminds me a lot of The Duke Spirit [who are playing this week at Bottom of the Hill, for all you Bay Area Miraclers—I recommend them live. See you there!], so that will likely be the first purchase.

I also already anticipate a The Long Blondes Pair on our FB page. I can hear it already!

Thank you so much, loving this mix! It will certainly mimic it's predecessor and find itself on repeat in my ears.

This mix is delicious from start to finish. I particularly like the Walkmen song and ending with DeVotchka was perfect. Plus, I think I might well have developed a crush on Carol Andrews.

Thank you so much you guys! I'm so glad you like....

Gioia, thanks! Yep, that hair is mesmerizing isn't it??

Kevin, Devotchka is fun huh (i think technically it's DeVotchKa, with weird caps). They're from Colorado and I love that they use the theremin and accordians and other old timey goodness.

Jeanne-Marie, you cracked me up! (And i totally thought the same thing looking at that pic..."Ahhh, so THAT's how that works....")

Xtina, your comment was the best comment I've ever received! You planned your wardrobe around my mix?? My 3mpm career is complete!! haha

Wes, thank you! Do you know, yours is the one mix I missed out on downloading (i'll have to beg and plead with our beloved hostess for a copy) so apologies for not commenting. As I was getting caught up I saw you had a tune by Archie Bronson Outfit too! (not sure which one) They are a new discovery for me.

I very much liked the Best Coast and Long Blondes cuts.

My query with the Hennepin County Library was unable to dig up any info on Carol L Andrews other than there was no-one with that name actually resident in Minneapolis at the time. No police report available for that day so it's still up to your imagination how she ended up there.

Ha ha! I was hoping someone would check her out! Alas, she remains a mystery for the ages. She would have wanted it that way.

Elvis Perkins' sound was really bugging me, and I did not just google him, rather, today when I heard the horns kick in I finally figured it out. No wonder he's so instantly likable and familiar.

Again, this mix is just terrific.

Fritz! You rock, I totally googled her too....and came up with nothing. (i even looked at obits to see if she had passed) I'm guessing that she wasn't a resident and that she might have a "married" name now?

I found the link to the other photos....it's a whole collection of awesomeness!

Hey Alix,

I don't know what I love more, that cover pic or the mix itself. That Walkmen tune is perfect opener which blends perfectly into that great Elvis Perkins song (both new to me) I'm also glad to know about Alela Diane. Love it!

If you can't get enough of fabulous mug shots, have a gander at these beauties

Alix,
Let me jump on the love train.

It's a wonderful mix, made all the better by keeping Carol's mugshot visible as I listen. The songs feel of a piece, but don't blur into one another. Each one has a unique thing to tell us about Carol. And may I add that "Once and Never Again" belongs every bit as much as the others. It's as if mugshot Carol is singing some much needed advice to her younger self.

I love all the songs but Elvis Perkins hits me right in the Neutral Milk Hotel sweet spot.

Loving your mix, Alexandra! Other than Beach House, Best Coast and Cold War Kids, it's all new to me -- one of the very best perks of the 3MPMP. I need to hear more Alela Diane and Sarah Blasko for sure ... and I haven't even fully digested the rest yet, but I look forward to doing so very soon.

As is the norm with Mrs Tyler, here we have another thoroughly entertaining mix, with a cool-as-F cover to boot! I mean really, where do you find them Alix? What an awesome photo! I have repeatedly caught myself staring into Carol's eyes while listening to this, trying to guess what she's thinking as she has her mugshot taken. Happy she ain't!

On a different note, I can't decide whether Alela Diane is cuter with the old hippy look, her interim short-haired phase, or with the new, sofisticated one. Soothing, warm tunes in any case.

What I do want to know is what is it with the city of Nevada, CA --Jayhawks wrote a song about it, and interesting/gorgeous (sometimes both) people stem from it. Sh*t, even a guy from Supertramp moved in. What is it??

Anywho. Muchas gracias Alix!!!

I love this mix Alexandra. I've been a tad remiss at keeping up with the steady flow of great music from the 3MPMP crowd so today I took my dog for a walk in a foggy Golden Gate Park and the mood you created perfectly matched mine.

I love when a mix starts off setting a tone, blends seamlessly and creatively and ends with a winner. This sure does. Elvis Perkins and Sarah Blasko were my instant favorites. I once saw Perkins at The Independent but I don;t have any of his music. Gotta change that.

A great mix! All stellar, but the standouts for me are from Alela Diane and Sarah Blasko, mainly because they're brand-spankin' new to me. Thanks, Alexandra.

I wish Archie Bronson got more love in the world. Thanks for the inclusion here.

Catching up on the mixes - I'm so late!
That's the best Walkmen song I've heard yet, and the second winner from the Archie Bronson Outfit I've heard in my short time here with the Prodge. Keep 'em coming!

C.Fry said...

As usual I am also late to the party. You got me with the Cold War Kids. A new-old favorite. Then up next I am mesmerized by the Alela Diane tune, mellow yet fringed with tension. The middle section of this mix is my favorite part. The drums on No Turning Back haunt. I had forgotten about Best Coast - thanks for remembering them for me :). Til the End of Time is a nice outlaw tune to finish out the mix. A tip of the hat for this one Alix.

Thanks so much you guys...y'all leave the best comments—so thoughtful. I know why Kelly is always on us to comment because its so great to hear what you guys like best (and I'm always stunned and happily amazd to share something you haven't heard of. I feel like my Prodge Peeps know EVERYTHING & EVERYONE!).

I love the way this mix rolls out, so clear and personal, like reading someone's diary. Love the Beach House cut, reminds me of dreaming, and the voice of Alela Diane is like ancient modern folk, special. And thanks for all the things new to me, like the Sarah Blasko and The Devotchka, thank you

I played Elvis Perkins way too much when his first album came out. Must be a crime somewhere. Favourites include Alela Diane and Sarah Blassko. And thanks for the flicker link - just fantastic.

Wish I had gotten to this earlier, Alix. Love the cover, love the title, love the title song. /// Elvis Perkins is new to me -- thanks for the introduction! Also for Alela Diane and Archie Bronson Outfit.

Love the Walkmen lead off track, love the mix. Elvis Perkins, Alela Diane, and Best Coast were other highlights for me. "Almost Ready" was one of my favorite mixes last season, and now you are 2 for 2 in my book.

For those of you new to Elvis Perkins, he's got a unique history. We featured his song 'Ash Wednesday' here on 9/11/08, along with a little background info on him.
