What's the big idea?
You remember Sterling Bromide, from April's I, Superfustinox: An Ode To Spring mix. Well, he won a recent Quiet Miraclers Lose Their Slot lottery, and now he brings us another hit mix of hits. Not sure if this mix has anything to do with anything here, but either way, you're in excellent (and rugged) hands with Sterling, as he's the same chap who generated this 29-comment level of excitement about his last mix:
'Superfustinox gets my vote as the best mix title yet!' 'I want to keep these liner notes in my pocket forever.' 'Monsieur Bromide! Smooth as Camembert, fresh as sushi. Mmmm, mmm, good. And 99% new to these lobes, save for the Cut Chemist-Atrud Gilberto, and the smuggled-in Chicago.' 'What a great mix. I love these grooves, especially Ocean Beat which is anew favorite tune. Apero Diet and Conquest also instantly catchy. That fadeout on Rollerskate is way cool.' 'I didn't know what to expect based on the title and cover, but low and behold, some of my fave Chilltraxian artists, including the phenomenal State of Bengal track, mixed in with lots of other groovy surprises. Loving it!' 'As a fellow lover of this genre, I am currently enjoying this mix just by reading the track list. Thank you, SB.' 'No alienation here-- quite happy to add to the trancy/techno/downtempo section of my library.' 'Loving Mad French and the Nutritionist!' 'I was dreaming I was in a coffeeshop in Amsterdam. I guess I was passed out, and when I woke up, these crazy tunes were playing over and over, louder and louder. I think I need a bong hit.' 'This is a darn fine mix, for several reasons. One such reason is the way the tracks fit together, with many of them containing callbacks to the tracks that preceded them, and another is the way it fits in with this year's 3MPM mixes - a number of these would have fit nicely on the flute mix!' 'Sterling, the best thing about the 3MPMP is getting to hear stuff you'd never hear if it weren't for the 3MPMP. Really dig the narration from Mad French. Also love the Delorean, the Cut Chemist and even the Cetera in Lemon Jelly. Nice work.' 'I'm with Danny Lee in that most of this is music I usually wouldn't listen to if it wasn't for the Project. And I'm very happy to do so, thank you very much! :)' 'Like many of the commenters thus far, I concur that it is moments like these that we Prodge freakazoids live for. I suspect that there will be a few other LP downloads today inspired by this mix.' 'I, Superfustonix_ is in action and, I am doing the Freaky Deaky!' 'I think I've got the prodge history right when I say "Thank you!" for breaking the prodge seal on Delorean' 'Love it! All of this grooviness is going directly into my "Palm Springs Pool" itunes playlist, with the exception of the Lemon Jelly track. Call me Ethel Rosenberg. Roller-roller-roller-skate-skate-roller :-)' 'Sterling, this is your best mix yet. Did I catch the theme from the great american hero in the final track? A mellow mesmerizing mix of mastery. Should I inflate your ego anymore than is its baseline? Probably not, but the Matias Aguayio track is so foreign and trippy is enough to make me break out the wikipeadia and research.' 'Just wanted to reiterate how great LTJ Bukem's Conquest is. Love the groove and the horns.'
Other big Sterling Miracling moments from the past include the catchy-catch NZ rock mix Kiwiana in Jan. 11, the high-concept narrative An Envious Sliver Broke in Nov. '09, and the 'Best Cover So Far' Pop Incarnate in June '08. So with that, let's bring out the master. MISTER STERLING BROMIDE!
Liner notes by SB: Black Like Doug Patterson
A collection of soul, funk, and R&B oddities
Ooh Ah Ee - Vern Blair Debate
A rhythm guitarist, a drummer, and a bassist debate who's the funkiest. I cast my vote for the drummer, but we all win.
Political Rag - King Solomon
A guy has too much to drink, then proceeds to bitch out the Nixon presidency. He happens to be in a recording studio with a bunch of funky accompanists, including a very hard-working flutist.
BlackRock Yeah Yeah = Blackrock
Ah, Memphis in the 70's. What memories that town and decade conjure! Sorry, I meant "What memories do that town and decade conjure?" I've never been to Memphis, and I can't remember much about the 70's.
Inflation - Chocolate Snow
The country is gripped by malaise. Squeaky tries to assassinate Gerald Ford in Sacramento. Daylight Savings Time starts two months early in response to the energy crisis. Jimmy Hoffa is reported missing. SNL premieres with George Carlin as first host. (Bonus: Name the two musical guests on the first episode). Sarah tries to assassinate Ford in San Francisco. The Edmund Fitzgerald sinks off Whitefish Point. US tries to go metric, but somehow fails. Meanwhile, Chocolate Snow captures the grim economic prospects of urban America — somehow they keep it funky.
Going to Make a Time Machine - The Majestic Arrows
This song is great, but the temporal inconsistencies in the lyrics can get to you:
First, if you're going to make a time machine, I can't very well get on board until you make it. You could invite me to help you build it perhaps, but I'm not jumping on an unfinished time machine — no way, no how.
Second, here's a few of the lyrics:
"You can be long, tall, skinny, fat,
Black or white, time machine don't care"
That sounds great and all, BUT..
"Where it's bound, nobody knows
Get on the Time Machine,
And away we go."
So if you don't know where it's going, why should I get on board? How many of you would take that offer? Probably wind up in a dystopian future where cockroaches use our bodies as rent-by-the-hour love motels....
My Sunshine Girl - Radiants
Speaking of rent-by-the-hour love motels, I dedicate this song to your host of 3MPMP, Ms. Kelly Niland. She is a sunshiny one indeed.
Got to Have It - Soul President
Soul President, doing it "hippie style" while "strolling down Haight Street" or "riding downtown in [his] Eldorado Biarritz."
I'm Blue - The Ikettes
Gong gong gong gong gong gong gong ga-ga-gong gong yeah!
Cut in 1961. The Ikettes replaced the Artettes as the backup group to the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Ike was such a great boss that a short list of the Ikettes' revolving personnel looks something like this:
Jo Armstead (1960–c.1964)
Alesia Butler
Jean Brown
Denise Ferri
Mary Brown
Jean Burks
Shelly Clark)
Venetta Fields (1961–1966)
Yolanda Goodwin
Martha Graham
Vera Hamilton
Eloise Hester
Patrice Holloway
Janice Singleton
Delores Johnson
Esther Jones
Claudia Lennear
Charlotte Lewis
Robbie Montgomery
Paulette Parker
Pat Powdrill
Edna Lejeune Richardson
Vermettya Royster
Diane Rutherford-Swann
Stonye Figueroa
Gloria Scott
Linda Sims
Jessie Smith
Rose Smith
Jackie Stanton
Marquentta Tinsley
Ann Thomas
Marcy Thomas
Adrienne Williams
Carlena "Flora" Williams
Debbie Wilson
Row My Boat - Four Mints
Four Mints, influenced by Gramschi's polemic on the Digger's agrarian communist movement in mid-17th century England, composed this cheeky song song about a member of the Wellingborough sect of Diggers in Northamptonshire. The Digger depicted in this tune (probably Gerrard Winstanley) is attempting to infiltrate a local landowner's tract by boat — via a minor tributary off what may be the Stanwick Lakes — in order to surreptitiously sow corn and cress on the land for the common weal. He is surprised by the daughter of the landowner, and discusses with her the possibility of creating an egalitarian rural community together. She demurs and Winstanley is later tried and hanged.
Such a Night - Darondo
It's not the heat, it's the humidity.

Billy Preston and Janis Ian, but you knew that already.
Very much enjoying this mix-- thanks!!
Ooh Ah Ee is the all-time best start of a 3MPMP mix. And BLDP is the funniest inside joke title. Still on the 1st song & baby is crying. I'll check back....
It IS lovable, isn't it, Marcella? But it's not my mix. It's from Sterling Bromide (AKA...?). And the title is a homage to my (I like to think) brilliant "Black Like Me" mix from last year.
Turning my attention now to Mr. Bromide:
Ooh Ah Ee - yes indeed. Also love the Solomon Burke, Chocolate Snow (for a second I thought, "Chocolate Rain? Really?"), The Majestic Arrows, The Ikettes, Darando... Where did you find all of this stuff? We should hang out more often.
Now wait a minute. I don't believe Doug Patterson is black at all. And I'm pretty sure that dude on the album cover ain't. That hair, though; Ion't know. Either way, that's some pretty crazy shit. Especially diggin' King Solomon. A pleasure, Mr. Bromide. If that's even really your name...
"Bass Is The Place" could be the subtitle of this mix. If you want to be black like Doug Patterson apparently you'll be needing a sound system with good low end response. (Damn these little computer speakers.)
Other than the Ikettes' song, 100% of this is new to me. Chocolate Snow, The Four Mints -- it's all mighty tasty stuff.
Thanks for the introduction to King Solomon (not to be confused with Solomon King, right?). "I'm going to have you waiting in gas lines" carbon dates "Politcial Rag" to the 1973-'74 oil embargo days, and "Thief, robber, all of that" says Nixon. Great pairing with "Going To Make a Time machine."
Love the Philly Soul vibraphone on "Row My Boat."
Righteous fro, Bro.
This mix makes babies cry. If that isn't a recommendation, I don't know what is.
I feel more soulful already! Lotsa good stuff in an unfamiliar genre. Love the Ikettes cut. Not sure what to make of the do though -- not an afro, not a jewfro -- a 'glofro? Rhymes w/ mofo. And a fan of same would be a glofrophile, which rhymes with gomer pyle, and is hard to say 3 times fast. Regardless, thanks for sharing, Sterl!
I'm concerned about Xtina making babies cry, but still, I want to pile on my accolades for Mr. Sterling. What a great collection. I find that I'm not so much entertained by all of the cuts, but more upset by some. That's even better. I was apprehensive about each upcoming cut. When the last time I was more careful about a date, I can't remember. It might have been that woman, well, you know. I think that Chocolate Snow might have changed me. Thanks again, Sterling.
Only 9 comments? I'm beginning to think that some of our members don't like black folk. Or that their funk motors are jammed. Or maybe they just prefer to listen to music while SITTING ON THE COUCH.
Correction – I meant to say "while SITTING ON THE FUCKING COUCH."
Sterling Bromide is, arguably, the funkiest man in San Francisco. I love it! xo
Politician mean... politics. I'm on tell you what I'm on do for ya. Yeah.
And yes, you look like a young Mick Jagger in the photo.
Ooh Ah Ee is indeed a great starter. I'm sorry to get to the party so late, this one's a keeper.
xtina once again making me wish the comments page had a "like" button.
Sterling stuff, as always. Inflation is pimptacular. Love that groove. My Sunshine Girl is Temptations-sweet. Love the falsetto. Row My Boat is like doo wop meets Ray Parker and Raydio. Such a Night is my other big favorite - just a stone cold soul tune. Thanks!
