Who here is up for an hour of wall-to-wall flawless jazz?
You, sir or madam? Then drop everything and click this thing now.
John Ross, he of the 18-commenter I'm Loaded with Rocket Fuel in late 2011 and the also-18-commenter For You in early '11, brought the necessary 'I wouldn't do this if I couldn't do this' swagger of an Influential Bop Collector to our Rite Spot hang, and now we are all the better for it. That 18:20 closer alone makes me want to shut down my ears for the rest of the month—I'm done. Or maybe that's the residual heroin from the jewel case. Either way, I feel good! So will you. Try this stuff out.

This mix is awesome. I never find myself listening to Jazz and then something like this comes along to remind me what I'm missing. As a result of listening today I've gone and pulled out my Sun Ra and Mingus records and I'm going to start from the beginning. Also, Fleurette Africaine might well be the most beautiful thing I've every heard from Duke Ellington. Thanks for the mix John.
Louis Armstrong & Sun Ra together at last. & Cal Tjader had his own thing going on. A real cool cat. Maybe we should have a whole season of 5MJMP. Thanks for sharing, John.
Cal Tjader is the odd name out in this great mix. Cool, as you'd expect, but skillfully compiled and sequenced. Great start to 2013!
Paul Rhodes
Some fine music which for the most part forced me out of my usual post/hard-bop comfort zone (rut?). Beautiful stuff, thank you!
Yes! Great, great mix. Starting out with what may be, possibly, the greatest Jazz song ever recorded. Hoagy and Satchmo -- an unbeatable, truly American combo sandwich. There's that halting, grinding sex beat: simple, supple, mesmerizing. This version of "Stardust" was crazy-innovative shit, considering when it was recorded. And Hoagy Carmichael's original 1927 recording is one of 50 songs in the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.
I love every track on this mix, John. Thanks so much for including Billy Taylor. He's not a household name, and he should be.
5MJMP! Can I second that, Sam?
Cal Tjader switches between 3MPMP and 5MJMP:

Ha! I've been trying to figure out how to slip that Cal Tjader cover of "Gimme Shelter" on a 3MPMP mix for the past three seasons, Tim!
Love your mix, John. Thank you very much. It's all great, classic stuff, so I find it impossible to single out anything for added praise. (Wouldn't be fair to the rest of this incredible music.) I will say, however, that although I've never been a Sun Ra fan, I really enjoyed "India." And the internet tells me that he was probably playing the first electric piano ever recorded. 1956 – cool!
Oh, and I love that organ ostinato on "Hip Walk."
Totally wonderful to get your jazz mix John. Who knew one could? We share similar tastes in jazz, you feature a lot of the heroes from my personal pantheon. Love hearing Billy Taylor too. He taught at UMASS where I spent a year in school.
Just finished the whole CD and ole to Ole! Wow. Love it.

Fritz?
I've got a fair amount of Fela, so, sure.
Love how the styles move around in this mix. Especially like the jump from Billy Taylor to Cal Tjader to Sun Ra. I don't have any Billy Taylor in my collection, so a nice discovery for me.
All told, any mix with vibraphone is a good one, in my opinion. Actually an all vibes mix sounds like a interesting idea. Would have to include some Bobby Hutcherson...
I have been back logged with 3mpm mixes, so I apologize for the posting this so late. I have to say this is a wall to wall mix that just flows from one song into the next. Like these guys all died and went to heaven together.
Familiar with most of these artists, but not all of the songs. I love that. New to Cal Tjader, thanks for putting him on here with these other giants. This Sun Ra song fits in the middle so well. Ole is a fine finish.
Brilliant mix John Ross, thank you!
First I have to thank the hostess for putting these two mixes together so we can really enjoy how uncannily similar these to gent's tastes are. That made this so much fun to listen to back and forth.
Dug the liner notes on both of these too.
I keep saying it, but I love how the influential theme lets us jump around in a non sequitur route that you would not typically take in making a mix. It is so fun and free form.
Now I jus want to mention a few of the songs that I loved. Mark - great pumpkin waltz, limehouse blues, a shot in the dark, carnival of the animals - so lovely - I can listen to over and over again. Blue Pepper is so hot I feel funny playing in around my kids. Wow. Duke, I never heard that side of you. The Bruce Cockburn song is a favorite of mine, and kind of breaks my heart, but the John Hartford song is just about the sweetest ditty ever.
Doug, if your parents schooled you in Porter Wagoner you should thank them daily. I had to watch Hee Haw when no one was around, or face a torrent of teasing. This mix takes me back to your very first 3mpm, which can fit in with most of your with your current liner notes. I just pulled it out - Nick Lowe, Elvis, O'Jays, Teenage Fanclub, Otis Redding, the Hollies and what was one of my favorites of season one - Kyu Sakamoto. Holy Crap and Thank you Doug!
